Chandigarh’s Solar Power Installations Highest Among Union Territories

The Association of Renewable Energy Agencies of States (AREAS), founded by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable energy, recently held its 8th Foundation Day ceremony in Cochin, Kerala. In the event, the Chandigarh Renewable Energy, Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) was rated the best among Union Territories for total solar power installations.

The other awards presented to the organization were for:

  • Achieving the 2nd highest renewable energy capacity by March 31st
  • Achieving the 2nd highest solar power capacity addition during 2021-22
  • Installing the 2nd highest number of solar streetlights as of March 31.

Mr. Bhagwanth Khuba, the minister for New and Renewable Energy, and Chemicals and Fertilizers presented the awards.

CREST has set a target of creating 75 MWp capacity by August 15th, 2023. Chandigarh has already installed and commissioned grid-tied solar plants with an aggregate capacity of 50.588 MWp at 4200 sites.

Moreover, many unique projects are in pipeline, according to Debendra Dalai, the secretary of science & technology and renewable energy and CEO of CREST. These include:

  • A 2 MWp floating SPV power plant at Water Works, Sector-39
  • A 2 MWp canal-top SPV power plant at N-Choe in front of Garden of Conifers, Sector-52
  • A 2 MWp canal-top SPV power plant at Patiala Ki Rao
  • 500 kWp floating SPV power plant, along with fountains at Dhanas Lake

To promote the installations of large-scale solar projects, CREST has also launched a financial incentive. During the ‘Akshay Urja Diwas-2022’ celebrations held in August, Mr. Dalai announced a prize of Rs. 1 Lakh for setting up a solar plant with a minimum capacity of 1 MW, by an RWA, Beopar Mandal, or Industrial Association.
