Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a Coal India subsidiary, will build a 50 megawatt (MW) solar power facility in Odisha’s Sambalpur for Rs 301.92 crore, bringing it closer to its objective of becoming carbon neutral by 2024. MCL has placed a turnkey order for the construction of a 50 MW solar power plant with M/s Hild Energy Ltd of Chennai, which would complete the project in ten months, according to a statement released on Saturday.
MCL’s (Mahanadi Coalfields Limited) captive power needs would be met by this solar project. In 2014, the Central Public Sector Undertaking successfully installed a 2MW solar power plant in Sambalpur.
According to the corporation, it has set a goal of adding 182 MW of solar power by 2024 to become a net-zero energy company, aligning itself to employ greener types of energy in coal production.
According to the MCL, this 50 MW solar power plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 91,020 tonnes per year and provide carbon offsets of roughly 24,824 tonnes per year.
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited is Coal India’s largest production subsidiary, including mines in the Odisha districts of Angul, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh. The company has coal production and dispatch targets of 163 million tonnes and 182 million tonnes, respectively, after achieving the highest ever capital investment of Rs 2,419 crore in the financial year 2020-21.
MCL was the first coal mining business to use environmentally friendly surface miner technology, which now accounts for over 95% of coal production. The company has successfully developed vertical rippers for blast-less overburden removal in the Hingula and Kaniha opencast projects as another environmentally responsible move.
