Highlights:

  • NHPC and Odisha government to develop renewable energy products
  • The two parties have signed an MoU to develop 2 GW of energy storage projects and 1 GW of solar projects.

NHPC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Grid Corporation of Odisha (GRIDCO) to develop renewable energy products in the state. As per the MoU, energy storage projects of a minimum 2 GW and solar energy projects (ground-mounted and floating solar) of at least 1 GW capacity will be developed.

NHPC is India’s largest hydropower company. It has also established a strong presence in the solar and wind energy sector.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Rajat Gupta, Executive Director of NHPC, and Mr. Trilochan Panda, Managing Director of GRIDCO Limited.

In December 2022, Odisha unveiled its renewable energy policy with a target to develop 10 GW capacity. One of the chief aspects of the policy is the development of floating solar and utility-scale solar projects. The state government is also planning to establish solar cities.

These state initiatives will undoubtedly contribute to India’s goal of developing 280 GW of solar capacity by 2030.
