World’s Largest Floating Solar Plant
Day-by-day renovations are being done in the field of solar, and new targets are being successfully met. Looking at this progress happening in the solar sector, it can be said that in India, solar is proving to be a field of progress.
Taking this goal forward, India is preparing to go to its next stage of the solar sector. The Madhya Pradesh government has come up with a new solar mission, the world’s largest floating solar power project. This project is being built on the dam “Omkareshwar” on the Narmada River in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The construction of which will be finished by the year 2022 – 2023.
The floating solar power project will have a capacity of 600 MW, which will cover about 2000 hectares of water. These panels will be installed on the backwaters of the dam (Razor Wire Area). Panels used in the project are automatically adjusted to their position, due to which there is no effect of the storm or other problems.
The amount spent on the project is Rs. 3000 crores, which is being provided by the International Finance Corporation, World Bank, and Power Grid. The first feasibility study of the project will be done by the World Bank. In which the construction plan of the project and the possibility of completion will be closely watched.
Tender for environmental and social related to the project has also been released in January 2021 and related work has started. Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company, while taking the initiative, said that out of the power produced from the plant, they will buy the power of 400MW capacity.
Benefits of floating solar plant:
- The government will not have to buy land, the investment on land will be saved.
- During the summer, a large amount of water evaporates from the rivers, its rate is reduced considerably due to the installation of solar power plants.
- Floating solar plants are more compact than land-based plants, making their installation and decommissioning much easier.
- This type of solar plant does not include any fixed structures, which makes installation easier.
