The Indian government has officially launched the 1 crore solar households scheme announced in the Interim Budget 2024. Named Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the rooftop solar scheme will get a total investment of ₹75,000 crore from the government.
As stated in the budget speech, all beneficiaries will get up to 300 units of free electricity every month. The government will also provide a hiked subsidy under the new scheme.
The subsidy details are as follows:

“From substantive subsidies, which will be given directly to people’s bank accounts, to heavily concessional bank loans, the Central Government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people. All stakeholders will be integrated to a National Online Portal which will further convenience,” said PM Modi.
On 29th February 2024, the Union Cabinet officially approved the scheme.
“The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana with a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore for installing rooftop solar and providing free electricity up to 300 units every month for one crore households,” an official statement said.
To avail the benefits under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, individuals can submit their applications at the new portal www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in.The national portal will also have all the necessary information about solar benefits, vendor details, and the solar size calculator.
Additionally, to popularize the scheme, the urban local bodies and panchayats will be incentivized to promote rooftop solar installations in their designated regions.
