In the past year, approximately 29,000 farmers in Rajasthan have benefited from solar the pump scheme, designed to provide clean energy through solar-powered pumps. The scheme allows for installing solar pumps with capacities of 3, 5, 7.5,and 10 horsepower (HP). However, an official said subsidies are available only for pumps up to 7.5 HP. Over the past five years, the state government has installed over 131,000 solar pumps, focusing on areas where farmers lack electricity access and rely on diesel-powered pumps or other alternatives for irrigation.
To support farmers, the government provides a 60% subsidy on solar pump installations, with an additional ₹45,000 subsidy for those belonging to Scheduled Tribes or Scheduled Castes. Farmers who own at least 0.4 hectares are eligible for the scheme, introduced by the previous Ashok Gehlot government.
“Those who have constructed water storage structures, pits, farm ponds, and water tanks of prescribed capacity for irrigation on their land are also eligible,” the official said. However, drip, mini sprinkler, or sprinkler systems must be used for irrigation alongside the solar pumps.
