The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched an initiative to install solar ev charging stations for its public buses. In the first phase, charging hubs at five locations—Ranip, Naranpura, Vastral, Jamalpur, and Vadaj—will be fitted with rooftop solar panels to power around 200 electric BRTS and AMTS buses.
This project is overseen by the Air Quality Management Cell, underscoring AMC’s broader goal to improve urban air quality. It complements related efforts such as urban forests, CNG-based crematoriums, and smart traffic management systems. The initiative is set to scale up to over 34 solar-backed charging stations citywide.
The AMC has also implemented previous renewable energy projects. In February 2024, solar panels were installed at three water treatment plants, saving 1.6–2 million units of electricity annually. By September 2024, a 30 MW solar park in Sabarkantha was commissioned, projected to save ₹20.6 crore per year and reduce CO₂ emissions by 37,704 tonnes. In Kutch, wind power installations have delivered savings of nearly ₹200 crore
With this move, Ahmedabad solidifies its role as a pioneer in green public transport, creating a replicable framework for integrating renewable energy with electric mobility infrastructure.
