India marks a major milestone in renewable energy with the Morena Solar-Plus-Storage Project, inaugurated on September 21, 2025 at Morena Solar Park, Madhya Pradesh. The project delivers a record-low tariff of Rs 2.70 per unit, becoming the cheapest firm and dispatchable renewable energy plant in India. Led by Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL), it underscores the nation’s push for affordable and sustainable energy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance.
The project integrates a solar-plus-storage system with a Storage-as-a-Service model, providing 24/7 power supply. Each of the two units generates 220 MW, totaling 440 MW across three phases, with 95% annual availability—far above the typical 85%. It efficiently uses surplus night-time grid electricity to meet morning peak demand, setting a new benchmark for reliable renewable energy.
The project also set a milestone in energy auctions, with the e-reverse auction on September 19, 2025, concluding after 12 hours to secure a 25-year tariff of Rs 2.70 per unit. Officials, including CM Mohan Yadav, highlighted that Morena proves renewable energy can be cheaper than conventional power and paves the way for future 24/7 green energy projects in India.
The Morena Solar-Plus-Storage Project demonstrates that innovative energy storage and solar integration can achieve affordability, reliability, and sustainability. By setting a national benchmark for firm green power, it opens doors for large-scale renewable adoption and inspires energy planners and policymakers to pursue long-term storage solutions nationwide.
