India’s Solar Module Manufacturing More Than Doubles to 144 GW in 2025

India has achieved a remarkable milestone in its clean energy drive, with domestic solar module manufacturing capacity more than doubling to around 144 GW in 2025. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), this represents a 128.6 percent year-on-year increase from roughly 63 GW in 2024, highlighting the rapid expansion of India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem.

This surge is a result of policy support under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) framework. In 2025 alone, India added approximately 81 GW of module production capacity, while solar cell manufacturing capacity also expanded, with about 24 GW enlisted under the ALMM List-II.

Solar modules — the panels that convert sunlight into electricity — are essential for powering everything from rooftop systems to utility-scale solar parks. The dramatic increase in manufacturing capacity means India can support larger solar installations domestically, reduce import dependence, and strengthen its position in the global clean energy supply chain. Officials say this growth also enhances energy security and aligns with India’s goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Analysts note that while the expansion is impressive, India’s solar module sector must continue scaling cell and wafer production to keep pace and avoid bottlenecks in downstream solar deployment. Nonetheless, the rapid rise in solar module manufacturing capacity is a key indicator of India’s evolving renewable energy leadership.
