By December 2025, the country’s total installed solar capacity reached 135.8 GW, accounting for 65.58 % of its renewable energy capacity and contributing roughly 26.44 % to the overall power mix.
This record surge was driven by a combination of utility-scale solar projects, rooftop installations, and hybrid solar systems, spread across urban and rural regions, reflecting balanced growth across segments. The expansion was powered by strong government support through policy frameworks such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) — enhancing domestic module standards and manufacturing capacity, now reaching 122 GW.
The broader renewable energy landscape also saw steady contributions from wind power, but solar remained the dominant force. The rapid rollout has generated employment opportunities, improved energy access in semi-urban and rural areas, and strengthened India’s energy security by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. Despite this impressive growth, coal continued to supply a significant share of total installed power capacity, highlighting the ongoing balance between renewables and traditional sources.
