Kolkata Metro commissions a 4 MW/6.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System on the Blue Line to boost reliability, safety, and energy efficiency. Learn more.

In a landmark step toward sustainable urban mobility, the Nagpur Metro has launched India’s first inter-track solar power pilot at its Hingna Depot. Commissioned in late April 2026, the project utilizes unused space between metro tracks to generate clean energy—marking a breakthrough in infrastructure-led solar innovation. Developed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro), the pilot demonstrates how transit systems can integrate renewable energy without requiring additional land.

The installation spans a 200-metre stretch and features 50 kWp monocrystalline, half-cut solar PV panels, designed for high efficiency within limited space. The system is expected to generate approximately 70,000 units of electricity annually, helping reduce nearly 65 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Notably, the generated power will be used for captive consumption within the depot, lowering dependency on conventional grid electricity.

What sets this project apart is its engineering complexity. Installed between active metro tracks, the system required advanced design to withstand vibrations from train movement, ensure safety, and allow maintenance access without disrupting operations. The project was executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with solar solutions provider Greenlife Solutions Pvt Ltd supplying and implementing the panels, while MahaMetro incurred no upfront investment.

Officials from MahaMetro highlighted that this pilot is part of a broader strategy to maximize renewable energy adoption across metro infrastructure. If successful, the concept could be scaled across Hingna and Mihan depots and potentially replicated in metro systems across India. By unlocking previously unused inter-track space, the Nagpur Metro solar initiative sets a precedent for cost-efficient, scalable clean energy integration in urban transit networks.
