India’s Solar Project Pipeline Exceeds 200 GW, Bringing 2030 Target Within Reach

India’s large-scale solar sector has reached a major milestone, with the country’s solar project pipeline exceeding 200 GW for the first time, according to data from the Mercom India Renewable Energy Project Tracker. The achievement highlights the unprecedented scale of solar project development underway across the country and strengthens confidence that India can achieve its ambitious target of 280 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030.

The growing pipeline includes projects in various stages of development, from tendered and auctioned capacity to projects under construction and awaiting commissioning. This expansion comes amid record renewable energy deployment across India. Solar power continues to account for the largest share of new renewable capacity additions, supported by favorable policies, strong investor interest, and increasing demand for clean energy from utility, commercial, and industrial consumers.

The 200 GW milestone reflects the rapid transformation of India’s energy landscape. Recent years have witnessed accelerated project development across solar-rich states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. India added a record 44.6 GW of solar capacity during FY 2025-26, pushing total installed solar capacity beyond 150 GW, while solar generation reached approximately 52 billion units (BU) in Q1 2026, a 24.3% year-on-year increase.

While the expanding project pipeline demonstrates strong momentum, the industry is increasingly focusing on transmission infrastructure, energy storage deployment, and domestic manufacturing capabilities to support future growth. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), hybrid renewable projects, and advanced grid infrastructure are expected to play a critical role in integrating the next wave of solar capacity into the national grid. As India advances toward its clean energy goals, the 200 GW project pipeline serves as a strong indicator of the country’s long-term commitment to renewable energy leadership.
