Kanpur is set to strengthen its renewable energy infrastructure after the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) approved power purchase agreements (PPAs) and adopted tariffs for 110 MW of grid-connected solar capacity across two new projects. The development includes a 75 MW solar plant in Kanpur Dehat and a 35 MW solar plant in Kanpur Nagar, with both projects contracted to supply electricity to the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) for a 25-year period.
The projects were awarded to Vedu Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. through a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process conducted by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). To execute the projects, the developer has incorporated two special purpose vehicles (SPVs)—Vedu Kanpur Dehat Solar Pvt. Ltd. and Vedu Kanpur Nagar Solar Pvt. Ltd. The discovered tariffs were ₹2.65/kWh for the 75 MW project and ₹2.71/kWh for the 35 MW project, following an e-reverse auction held in September 2025. The tariffs were found to be competitive after the reduction in GST on solar power generators, improving the overall economics of the projects.
UPERC has also mandated that both projects use ALMM-compliant solar modules and cells, in line with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) guidelines. The developers will not be eligible to claim “change in law” compensation related to ALMM requirements or basic customs duty (BCD) revisions. While the specific module technology, annual energy generation, and commissioning timeline have not yet been disclosed, the projects are expected to significantly enhance renewable energy procurement in Uttar Pradesh and help meet the region’s rising electricity demand.
The approval marks another milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s clean energy transition, reinforcing the state’s focus on utility-scale solar development through transparent competitive bidding. With 110 MW of new solar capacity planned for the Kanpur region, the projects will contribute to a cleaner power mix, improve grid sustainability, and support India’s broader renewable energy targets.
