India Adds 17.7 GW of Solar Capacity in First 5 Months of FY27

India’s solar sector continued its rapid expansion in the first five months of financial year 2026–27, with the country adding 17.78 GW of new solar capacity between April 1 and August 31, 2026. According to the latest renewable energy physical achievement data, solar remained the dominant contributor to India’s clean energy capacity additions during the period, highlighting the continued momentum of utility-scale and distributed solar deployment.

During August 2026 alone, India added 3,445.30 MW of solar capacity, alongside 383.43 MW of wind capacity. Total renewable energy capacity additions between April and August stood at 20,866.27 MW, excluding large hydro, of which solar contributed 17,779.35 MW and wind accounted for 2,425.48 MW. This demonstrates the increasingly important role of solar and wind in driving India’s renewable energy growth.

India’s cumulative installed solar capacity reached 168.04 GW as of August 31, 2026. This included 123.99 GW of ground-mounted solar, 32.59 GW of grid-connected rooftop solar, 4.83 GW of solar capacity under hybrid projects and 6.63 GW of off-grid solar. Meanwhile, the country’s installed wind capacity reached 58.52 GW, taking the combined solar and wind capacity to approximately 226.56 GW.

Including large hydro, India’s total renewable energy capacity stood at 295.55 GW, while overall non-fossil fuel capacity, including nuclear power, reached 304.33 GW by the end of August. With solar accounting for the overwhelming share of new renewable capacity additions in FY27 so far, the sector continues to play a central role in India’s transition towards a cleaner and more diversified energy system.
