Taking one more step toward the Green India Initiative, NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation Limited) has floated a global tender to set up 1 GW of the battery storage system for their grid-connected solar power plant. For this tender, NTPC has invited EOI (Expression of Interest).
For this project, NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation Limited) is open to a co-investment partner, with whom NTPC will design, build & operate this project. The last date for submission for EoIs is 10 August 2021.
If the grid connectivity fails, due to some reason, then this 1 GW (1,000-MWh) storage system will be able to provide power to around 1 Million homes for 1 hour and 30,000 electric cars too. Besides providing electricity from the sources such as solar, wind will also help the country’s ambitious clean energy targets.
According to the expression of interest (EoI) floated on Saturday, India’s largest power generation utility, “Intends to set up 1000 MWh of Grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at single/split across multiple NTPC power plants in India. In this regard, NTPC Limited invites Expression of Interest (EoI) from any Indian/Global Company/their Consortium/Affiliates/Representatives”.
Being a part of the Green Energy Initiative, India is working towards developing some new schemes related to electricity generation, which will help generate electricity from renewable sources in the future.
As per the Central Electricity Authoritys’ analysis, India’s electricity demand will touch 815 GW by 2030, more than half of which will be met by renewable energy.
“CEA’s Optimal Generation mix report outlines the need for 27 GW of grid-scale battery energy storage systems by 2030 with four hours storage,” the EoI said.
NTPC has 65.81 GW of installed generation capacity through 70 power plants, and 18 GW is still under construction. Further, to become a power producer with 130 GW capacity by 2032, NTPC planned to invest ₹1 trillion between 2019 and 2024, of which 60 GW will come from renewable energy. The public sector undertaking (PSU) has announced its target of 10% reduction in net energy intensity so that they are able do carbon neutrality & touch their renewable energy target.
“This EOI is to assess commercialisation prospects of Setting up Grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System. The BESS shall be set up within NTPC power plant premises. After identifying the APPLICANTs through EoI who are interested in setting up 1000 MWh Grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System, Request for Proposals (RfP) for undertaking project(s) at single/split across multiple NTPC plants shall be invited separately for setting up the facilities and scalable model for further additional requirements.
Grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) have been the subject of intensive research in recent times in India owing primarily to the emerging challenge of integrating large amounts of variable renewable energy (VRE) in the power grid,” the EoI added.
At present, NTPC has about 4 GW of renewable capacity, mostly solar power. NTPC is planning to add at least 5 GW of solar capacity within the coming two years.
“Amongst the most promising business models of BESS that’s likely to emerge in the future is its integration with existing large power plants, which are required to be flexibly operated to provide either firm, schedulable power or reliable and balancing support to the grid,” the EoI (Expression of Interest) said.
“NTPC’s conventional fleet will increasingly be required to operate flexibly to support the grid, as VRE penetration invariably increases in India’s power system under its policy-driven initiative to increase its share of installed capacity from non-fossil fuel power sources by 2030 and beyond,” the EoI (Expression of Interest) added.
