Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) announced the commissioning of a 5 MW floating solar project at the company’s thermal power plant in Jaipur mandal of Mancherial district, Telangana. SCCL is a government-owned coal mining corporation with a solar portfolio of 224 MW (including the new project).
The plant was inaugurated by D. Satyanarayana Rao, SCCL Director, on Saturday, 28th January 2023.
The total capacity of the floating solar project, developed on a reservoir, is 15 MW (AC) and 19.5 MW (DC). As of now, only 5 MW (AC) and 6.5 MW (DC) capacity has been commissioned. SCCL plans to add the remaining capacity in the next few months.
As per the company statement, the 5 MW would generate 27,000 units daily (every 1 kW generates 5.4 units), and around 10 million units of energy annually. Moreover, it is estimated that the project would help SCCL save around ₹3 crores annually in energy bills.
Novus Green Energy was awarded the EPC contract. Further, the official statement says that the design of the project was vetted by the Indian Institute of Madras (IIT).
Speaking about the project, Mr. Rao said that SCCL is the only public sector coal company to venture into thermal and solar power generation besides its primary activity of coal mining. The organization’s other solar projects are located in the Manuguru, Kothagudem, Yellandu, Ramagundam, and Mandamarri areas of Telangana.
India’s current largest floating solar plant of 100 MW capacity is also located in Ramagundam, Telangana.
