The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has given a target to all airports to meet 100% of their electricity demand through green energy.
The concerned officials have stated a 100% green energy by 2024 and net-zero by 2030 target has been set for all operational airports. AAI has already designed a roadmap to achieve this goal, along with launching initiatives such as Energy Intensity Data publication and reducing energy intensity for existing and upcoming airport projects.
Further, AAI has created a training module for Air Traffic Controllers to explain carbon neutrality.
Currently, 27 airports in the country use 100% green energy. These include Cochin, Mumbai, Puducherry, Kanpur (Civil), Hubballi, Belagavi, Mysore, Tezu, Kangra, Shimla, Kullu, Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Imphal, Pakyong, Pantnagar, Dehradun, Dimapur, Jalgaon, Kohlapur, Pune, Aurangabad, Gondia, Akola, Sholapur, and Juhu. Renewable energy accounts for almost 35% share of AAI airports’ electricity demand.
AAI has already installed a 54 MWp solar capacity across various airports.
The organization is also procuring around 53 million units of solar energy through open-access and green power tariffs.
The fully solar-powered Cochin Airport was the first green airport in the world. Moreover, Delhi airport became the first to power its operations through hydro and solar energy in 2022.
