Battery Energy Storage System supporting India's renewable energy grid
Battery Energy Storage System supporting India's renewable energy grid

India’s energy storage sector is poised for unprecedented growth, with the country’s total energy storage requirement projected to increase from around 1 GWh today to 888 GWh by FY2035-36, according to the latest India BESS Market Review released by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and Customized Energy Solutions (CES) during India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2026. The report highlights that energy storage will become a cornerstone of India’s clean energy transition as renewable power generation continues to expand rapidly.

The study estimates that India will require 174 GW of energy storage capacity, comprising 94 GW of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) and 80 GW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by FY2035-36. This massive expansion is essential for integrating large-scale solar and wind power into the national grid while ensuring reliable electricity supply during non-generation hours. Energy storage is now considered a critical enabler for achieving India’s renewable energy and grid reliability goals.

According to the report, India’s installed battery storage capacity currently stands at approximately 1 GWh, underscoring the scale of investment and infrastructure required over the next decade. As the country moves toward its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030, advanced battery storage systems will play a vital role in reducing renewable energy curtailment, balancing peak demand, and supporting grid flexibility. The report also identifies standalone BESS projects as one of the fastest-growing segments in India’s power sector.

The findings reinforce the growing importance of battery energy storage across utility-scale, commercial, and industrial applications. With supportive government policies, increasing renewable deployment, and falling battery costs, India is entering a new phase where energy storage will be just as important as renewable generation itself. The report positions BESS and pumped hydro storage as key technologies for delivering reliable, round-the-clock clean energy and strengthening India’s long-term energy security.
