Coal India Limited (CIL) has revealed extensive plans to foray into the solar power market. The organization is targeting 3 GW capacity by 2025-26.
CIL has already released the contract details for 379 MW of solar projects which will be developed at various subsidiaries of Coal India, along with a 100 MW solar plant for Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL).
CIL has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd for the development of a solar project in the Bikaner region.
Coal India states that its existing solar power installations across subsidiaries have produced a cumulative 6.83 million units of electricity. Moreover, ground-mounted projects with a total capacity of 279 MW are currently being executed.
Projects with a capacity of 23.5 MW have been commissioned and there are plans to develop an additional 20 MW rooftop solar capacity. CIL is also considering the deployment of solar power plants at the mine-out land parcels.
Coal India has also established a subsidiary called CIL Navikarniya Urja Limited to lead this solar venture.
This foray into solar aligns with CIL’s goal of making its mining operations more energy-efficient and reducing carbon emissions. In October 2023, the coal ministry announced that several central PSUs, including Coal India, are working towards net zero. In June 2023, South Eastern Coalfield Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of CIL, also revealed plans to set up solar projects with a total capacity of 600 MW in Chhatisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
