The Punjab government is set to establish 66 solar power plants, each with a capacity of 4 MW, resulting in a total capacity of 264 MW. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, cut the state’s annual power subsidy, and position Punjab as a leader in clean energy production.

Aman Arora, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Sources, and Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO announced that the project will generate about 390 million units (MU) of electricity annually and save roughly ₹136 crores each year through feeder-level solarization, with plans for future expansion.

This project will attract ₹1,056 crore in investments and create jobs for both skilled and semi-skilled individuals in the non-conventional energy sector. Additionally, this initiative is expected to boost agricultural output and revitalize the rural economy of the state, he added.

Punjab has been actively advancing renewable energy. As of June 30, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy reports that the state has a total installed renewable energy capacity of 3,197 MW, with solar energy comprising approximately 1,357 MW.
