The Assam government has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to expand solar power capacity to 3,500 megawatts (MW) by 2030, accelerating the state’s transition to clean and sustainable energy. Announced on January 16, 2026, this target reflects Assam’s commitment to meeting rising electricity demand while cutting dependence on fossil fuels, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Under the multi-layered strategy, Assam plans to develop large solar parks, expand rooftop solar systems, and introduce small-scale solar solutions for rural and remote areas. Officials highlighted that the state’s favorable natural conditions, supportive policies, and improved grid infrastructure put it in a strong position to scale up solar power generation.

The expansion effort will include installations on government offices, schools, colleges, and hospitals, lowering electricity costs for public facilities and creating local demonstration sites for renewable adoption. The government also intends to bring together public sector firms, private developers, and central agencies to expedite solar capacity additions across districts.

Beyond energy generation, the solar push is expected to boost employment — especially for local youth, technicians and small businesses involved in installation and maintenance — while supporting Assam’s broader goals of economic development, environmental protection, and energy security as it moves toward a low-carbon future.
