A new energy-sector study highlights that India needs to mobilize approximately $145 billion annually to power its renewable expansion, modernize its grids, and scale up energy storage solutions, according to Wood Mackenzie, a leading global energy research firm. The assessment was shared at the India Energy Week 2026, where analysts underscored the urgency of aligning capital deployment with India’s net-zero and growth objectives.

The investment is expected to be concentrated on three major pillars: renewable power generation capacity, energy storage infrastructure, and distribution and transmission network modernization. Experts noted that the rapid expansion of solar and wind capacity must be matched by improved grid flexibility and storage deployment to enable reliable and round-the-clock clean power delivery.

Wood Mackenzie officials, including Vice Chairman Joshua Ngu, emphasized that while India has made progress, non-fossil fuel capacity now exceeds fossil fuel, and the execution challenge lies in integrating large volumes of intermittent renewable energy into the grid securely. The consultancy projects that failure to invest adequately could jeopardize both energy security and climate commitments.

Energy storage solution, particularly battery energy storage systems (BESS) and grid-scale solutions, were singled out as a crucial investment area to support variable renewable generation and enhance grid stability. Without sufficient storage capacity and grid modernization, renewables might face curtailment and operational limits.
