20,000 Government Buildings to Get Rooftop Solar Plants in J&K

Highlights:

  • J&K government is planning to solarize all government buildings by 2025
  • Once complete, the initiative will add 300 MW of solar capacity in the union territory

J&K government has unveiled plans to cover all government buildings in the region under the rooftop solar programme. Nearly 20,000 buildings will be solarized by 2025. The cumulative capacity of the projects will be 300 MW.

The NHPC will act as a technical partner for the programme, and will be responsible for assessing potential and feasibility study.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, in a high-level meeting, has instructed officials to appoint nodal officers at the J&K and district levels for the execution of the programme. The minister has also advised the UT to increase the expenditure for energy evacuation.

The easily accessible sites will be covered with rooftop solar plants in the first year and the remaining in the second year.

Currently, rooftop solar projects have been set up on 1900 government buildings, with a cumulative capacity of 27.61 MW. Moreover, the electricity demand for government-related institutions (offices, hospitals, schools, colleges, universities, defense establishments, etc.) is approximately 600 MW.

Research has shown that if 50% of this demand is met through solar energy, the J&K government can save up to 700 crore rupees every year.

Jammu and Kashmir has the second highest solar potential in India. The J&K government has begun implementing measures to harness this potential and develop the renewable energy infrastructure in the union territory.
