Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) annual electricity bills surpass Rs 300 crore.
Water supply projects account for 68%, sewage 16%, street lighting 12%, and miscellaneous uses the remaining 4% of the total bill.
To offset the energy usage, AMC is investing in the installation of large RE projects such as the 50 MW initiative, which includes 20 MW wind and 30 MW solar plants in Nakhatrana and Jamjodhpur in Kutch. The goal is to boost its current RE share from 14% to 43% by December 2025.
Currently, AMC has launched a net zero cell to achieve a net zero Ahmedabad by 2070, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality in city operations.
“Our future plans include equipping all municipal buildings with solar power and gradually transitioning to solar street lighting,” an AMC official said.
A decade ago, the Energy Efficiency Cell (EEC) was established in the AMC to cut power costs. However, electricity expenses have surged from Rs 93 crore in 2010-11 to approximately Rs 300 crore in 2022-23.
“Our electricity bills have tripled since 2010, partly due to the expansion of water treatment plants, pumping stations, and new sewage facilities, which are being executed using the World Bank loan. We are aiming to leverage these new civic facilities to generate additional renewable energy credits,” the official added.
