Central Railway Adds 4 More Locations Generating Solar Power in Maharashtra

In the Central Railway zone, rooftop solar panels on four more railway properties have started to generate solar power. Igatpuri railway hospital, Igatpuri railway station, Kasara railway station, and Titwala cabin are the four new destinations.

According to the Central Railway, with the addition of the four new locations to the network, the Central Railway now has a total of 48 solar-generating sites. All 48 locations will now produce 2.5 million units of green energy, saving the railroads Rs 1.9 crore per year that would have been spent on fuel.

“The Central Railways’ move to sustainable energy would not only lower annual carbon emissions by 412 tonnes but also assist the national transporter save Rs 1.9 crore in fuel costs every year,” says CPRO Shivaji Sutar. Anil Kumar Lahoti, General Manager of Central Railway, conducted the yearly inspection on the Igatpuri – Kalyan stretch of Mumbai Division just as the solar panels on the four places became active.

Lahoti toured the new solar power installations, as well as the reservation counters, crew lobby, running room, and the training coach, which was built from a scrapped coach. The Bio-Toilet evolution model, which has made railway tracks and stations cleaner, was also inspected by the Central Railway General Manager. He also dedicated a herbal garden and a solar-powered rolling in and rolling out house.

Rooftop solar has been installed at over a thousand railway stations in India. Varanasi, New Delhi, Old Delhi, Howrah, Agra, Kolkata, Jaipur, Secunderabad, Guwahati, and Katra are among the important installations.

According to official sources, the Indian Railways plan to install rooftop solar on 7000 railway stations around the country.

A 3MW solar power facility has been built at Rae Bareli. The Railway Energy Management Company Limited (REMCL) would build two 1.7 MW and 2 MW plants in Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, respectively.

The NITI Ayog recently asked the Railways to designate at least 20% of parking capacity at railway stations or office complexes for electric vehicle charging bays or battery charging and swapping stations, as well as install at least one EV charging point at each targeted manned level crossing and railway colony, to promote renewables and clean energy.
