Gujarat's Residential Rooftop Solar Program Extended to 750 MW from 600 MW

Under the SURYA-Gujarat program, the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) has agreed to allow registration of residential rooftop solar applications with a capacity of up to 750 MW from empaneled vendors for the fiscal year 2020-21.

Empaneled suppliers submitted 274,006 applications for a total capacity of 1.06 GW, according to GUVNL’s webpage.

Paschim Gujarat Vij Company (PGVCL) announced a tender in 2019 for the installation of 600 MW of grid-connected residential rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems by empaneled agencies.

Bidders were asked to provide costs that included a five-year complete maintenance contract.

PGVCL separated bidders into two groups. Those who had installed and commissioned at least 100 kW of solar power in any sector, including residential, social, industrial, commercial, and government, were considered Category-A bids. Those who were not covered by Category-A bids were included in Category-B bidders.

The Gujarat Government’s Energy and Petrochemical Department, however, extended the deadline for receiving applications to build the 600 MW of rooftop solar systems until February 2020. The deadline has been pushed back to February 28, 2020. PGVCL relaunched the tender in March 2020.

PGVCL sought offers for solar systems with the following capacities: 1-1.5 kW, 1.51-2.50 kW, 2.51-3.50 kW, 3.51-4.50 kW, 4.51-5.50 kW, 4.51-5.50 kW, 5.51-6 kW, 6 kW, over 6 kW to 10 kW, above 10 kW to 25 kW, 25 kW to 50 kW, 50 to 100 kW, and above 100 kW.

The Surya Urja Rooftop Yojana was launched by the Gujarat government to promote rooftop solar in the residential sector. The programme offers a 40% subsidy for systems up to 3 kW and a 20% discount for projects greater than 3 kW but less than 10 kW.

Gujarat accounted for 55 percent of the installed rooftop solar capacity in the second quarter of 2021, according to Mercom’s India Rooftop Solar Market Report Q2 2021. As of June 30, 2021, the state had a total rooftop solar capacity of 1.27 GW.
