In a pioneering move towards sustainable energy, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi has inaugurated India’s first removable solar panel system installed between active railway tracks. This innovative project, launched on August 15, 2025, aligns with Indian Railways’ commitment to renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
The pilot system stretches 70 meters along Line No. 19 of the BLW workshop and consists of 28 bifacial monocrystalline solar panels, each weighing 31.83 kg and measuring 2278x1133x30 mm. Installed on concrete sleepers using epoxy adhesives and rubber pads, the panels are designed to withstand vibrations from passing trains. Their removable design allows for effortless maintenance without interrupting rail operations.
Each panel has 144 half-cut PERC bifacial cells, an IP68 junction box, and a maximum system voltage of 1500 V, with a module efficiency of 21.31%. The system delivers 15 kWp, generating around 321,000 kWh annually per kilometer. Using existing railway space, it maximizes energy output without extra land, making it highly scalable.
BLW’s General Manager, Naresh Pal Singh, commended the engineering team, led by Chief Electrical Service Engineer Bhardwaj Chaudhary, for their innovation and dedication. He emphasized that the project not only contributes to Indian Railways’ carbon neutrality goals but also sets a benchmark for future green energy initiatives across the country’s railway sector.
