India’s cumulative renewable energy capacity has reached 188 GW, announced Droupadi Murmu in a joint session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. It is a remarkable increase from the 81 GW RE capacity a decade ago.
President Murmu also shared that the solar power capacity has increased 26-fold and wind power capacity has doubled in the last 10 years. Currently, India occupies the 4th position globally in renewable energy and 5th in solar power capacity.
India has the goal of achieving 50 percent of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030. Towards this target, the nation is in the process of significantly expanding its solar infrastructure. The president stated that India is constructing 11 new solar parks and developing another 9 renewable energy parks.
Moreover, the prime minister has just launched a new rooftop solar installation scheme with a target of solarizing 1 crore households. The scheme is expected to reduce the electricity bills of the poor and middle class and reduce the burden on the national grid.
In her address, President Murmu also highlighted the advancements in other energy sectors, including the implementation of nuclear power plants and green hydrogen projects.
