A new study by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has identified a significant opportunity in India’s clean energy landscape, estimating the country’s solar potential at an impressive 10,830 gigawatts (GW). This figure is nearly 15 times higher than the earlier government estimate of 748 GW, signaling a transformative shift in how India can approach solar energy deployment.

The study, titled Reassessment of Solar Potential in India: A Macro-Level Study, highlights a more inclusive approach to estimating solar capacity—going beyond traditional barren lands to also include rooftops (960 GW), floating solar (100 GW), agri-voltaics (4,177 GW), and infrastructure like railways and highways (684 GW). The largest share still comes from barren lands, contributing about 4,909 GW of the total potential.

While the estimate is theoretical, TERI emphasizes the importance of conducting micro-level assessments using GIS mapping, proximity to grid infrastructure, and solar irradiation data to convert this potential into actionable projects. The study encourages broader policy thinking, suggesting that India’s solar growth need not be limited to deserts or large-scale farms.

This reassessment aligns with India’s national target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. With the right policy support and investments, this data positions India to emerge as a global leader in solar innovation and sustainability.
