

India’s solar power capacity surged by 18 GW during the first half (H1) of 2025, a 31% increase compared to H1 2024, according to the Mercom India Research report. This remarkable growth highlights the country’s accelerating shift toward clean energy.
The breakdown reveals that utility-scale solar projects contributed 14.3 GW, a 49% YoY rise, while rooftop solar installations added 3.2 GW, marking a 76% increase. Additionally, off-grid solar capacity grew by 18.6%, bringing added energy access through distributed solutions.
As of June 2025, India’s total renewable energy capacity stands at 234 GW, with solar accounting for 50%, wind for 22%, and large hydropower 21%. With a project pipeline of over 148 GW across solar, wind, hybrid, and storage, and another 74 GW under bidding, India is poised for even greater clean energy gains.
