Kolkata Metro Railway has commissioned a 4 MW / 6.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the underground Blue Line, marking a significant milestone in urban transit power resilience. The system was inaugurated on February 26 2026 at the Central Metro station, strengthening operational reliability and passenger safety in the event of power outages along the metro corridor.
The 6.4 MWh BESS, consisting of 88 racks equipped with built-in fire suppression, is integrated with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology and advanced power electronics. This large-scale deployment makes Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line the first underground metro in India to adopt a high-capacity energy storage system capable of supplying auxiliary power, maintaining tunnel ventilation, and hauling trains safely to the nearest station in grid failure scenarios.
Subransu Sekhar Mishra, General Manager of Metro Railway Kolkata, stated that the backup application ensures that commuters will not face suffocation and trains can continue moving during outages, significantly enhancing reliability and safety. The BESS also supports critical systems such as lighting, ventilation, and control during grid disruptions, reinforcing uninterrupted metro operations.
Developed and implemented in collaboration with industry partner Delta Electronics India, the system also contributes to improved energy efficiency and peak power management. This deployment reflects broader trends toward embedding battery energy storage in public transport infrastructure, aligning with India’s focus on strengthening grid resilience and enabling sustainable urban mobility.
