On December 21, 2025, the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, inaugurated a 10 MW solar power plant at Thenzawl in Serchhip district, marking a significant advancement in the state’s renewable energy drive and its vision for energy self-sufficiency. The project was completed at a cost of ₹74.82 crore with financial support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), reflecting strong institutional backing for clean energy infrastructure in the region.

The solar power plant is expected to strengthen the state’s generation capacity and support the growing electricity demand, which has recorded a peak demand of around 160 MW in recent months. The plant’s electricity is already connected to the 132-kV Lunglei and Serchhip–Bukpui transmission lines, and future expansions aim to link it further to the 33-kV Thenzawl sub-station. Since commissioning, the plant has generated power worth approximately ₹3.42 crore in value at an equivalent external purchase rate of ₹5.34 per unit.

Officials highlighted that the plant will play a key role in reducing Mizoram’s dependence on imported power and will contribute to a more sustainable energy mix. In addition to solar, the state government is pushing ahead with other renewable and hydropower projects, including proposals for solar parks at Sumsuih (5 MW) and multiple planned sites at 10 MW each across key districts. These efforts are aimed at bolstering the state’s renewable portfolio and achieving long-term energy resilience.

The inauguration of this solar power plant underscores growing momentum in India’s Northeast toward decentralized clean energy generation, aligning with national targets of expanding solar infrastructure and reducing carbon emissions.
