Odisha plans to generate 1,000 MW of floating solar energy from its reservoirs soon. The state has established an inter-departmental committee to explore the potential of floating solar power. The committee has held multiple meetings to ensure the timely execution of projects at key reservoirs like Hirakud, Rengali, and Upper Indravati.

Feasibility studies have been conducted across 51 medium reservoirs in Odisha to evaluate the viability of floating solar power generation.

Odisha aims to achieve a renewable energy capacity of 10 GW by 2030, with approximately 7.5 GW coming from solar energy. According to studies by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability, and Technology (iFOREST), the state has the potential to generate up to 33.5 GW of floating solar power across 670 sq km of water bodies.

Floating solar farms offer several advantages, including increased energy production, land conservation, and improved water management. By utilizing the unused water surfaces of reservoirs, these projects can take advantage of the cooling effect of water, which enhances the efficiency of the solar panels.
