Over 10 GW of Solar Park Capacity Commissioned in India: R.K Singh

Highlights:

  • R.K Singh has stated that India has a solar potential of 748 GWp
  • 10.5 GW of solar capacity has been commissioned in 20 solar parks as of December 31, 2023.

India has a solar potential of 748 GWp, stated the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy R.K Singh, in a letter addressed to the Rajya Sabha. This estimate is based on the data from the Waste Land Atlas of India 2010.

Speaking about India’s progress in solar energy development, Singh also informed the assembly that since December 2014, India has sanctioned a total of 51 Solar Parks across 12 states with a total capacity of 37,740 MW.

Out of this capacity, 10.5 GW of solar capacity has already been commissioned in 20 solar parks, as of December 31, 2023.

The Indian government has a target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The government is taking multiple measures to achieve this goal. For this fiscal year, the Interim Budget 2024 has allocated a sum of ₹10,000 crore for solar power grid projects.

Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana to install rooftop solar projects across 1 crore poor and middle-class households.

While there are no state-wise targets towards the national RE goal, multiple states have introduced ambitious solar energy policies to boost capacity.

In January, Delhi launched a solar policy with a target of 4.5 GW capacity by 2027 and a slew of financial incentives for residential, commercial and industrial consumers.
