Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has inaugurated a 10.5 MW solar power plant in Kothagudem. Developed by State-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), the project was built at a cost of ₹56 crore.

The ground-mounted solar plant has been set up over a land area of 48 acres. Moreover, early estimates suggest that the project will generate 16 million units of clean electricity annually.

The minister also stated that SCCL will focus on setting up floating solar projects and pumped energy storage projects to harness clean energy.  Moreover, the government is also planning to set up additional solar power plants on opencast overburden dumps and floating solar power projects in the reservoirs in the coal belt area.

The state is also exploring plans to install solar panels on the main canal bunds of the major and medium irrigation projects and also set up pumped storage hydroelectric power projects in the SRSP, Nagarjunasagar, and Srisailam reservoirs.

In line with such initiatives, the state government will also unveil its renewable energy policy soon. The minister suggested that the state has suffered in the renewable energy sector due to a lack of RE policy in the last 10 years.

In January, SCCL commissioned a 5 MW floating solar project in the state. The state is also planning to solarize 500 schools. Additionally, leading solar panel manufacturer RenewSys India has also decided to set up multiple solar modules and solar cell manufacturing facilities in Telangana.
