The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has issued a tender to develop a 5 MW solar rooftop project across metro stations and depots in Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow. This initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to renewable energy and carbon reduction. The project will be implemented under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model, where the selected developer will handle design, supply, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance for 25 years.
The project is estimated to cost ₹204.2 million (~$2.41 million), and interested bidders must submit an earnest money deposit of ₹4.08 million. The deadline for bid submission is May 30, 2025, with bids opening on May 31, 2025. Participation is open to domestic and international bidders, including single entities, joint ventures, consortia, or associations, with an eligibility criterion of ₹81.6 million average annual turnover.
This tender follows UPMRC’s earlier efforts, such as the 1 MW solar rooftop project for the Agra Metro announced in January 2024. Similar initiatives by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation also reflect a broader trend of integrating solar energy into public transport systems to cut operational costs and reduce environmental impact.
Industry experts have welcomed UPMRC’s move, calling it a model for sustainable urban infrastructure. The success of this project could accelerate renewable energy adoption in public transport, contributing significantly to Uttar Pradesh’s clean energy goals and setting an example for other states to follow. As the bidding process progresses, stakeholders anticipate a competitive response from leading solar developers.
