Virudhunagar district has the highest solar potential in Tamil Nadu, with an estimated 24 GW capacity for ground-mounted solar projects. This surpasses other districts like Trichy (13 GW) and Tirunelveli (12 GW), according to the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) data updated on October 6, 2025.

The district benefits from high solar irradiance (3.11–5.80 kWh/m²/day) and ample land availability, making it ideal for large-scale solar deployment. For example, a 50 MW solar photovoltaic (SPV) plant requires just 0.29 km² of land, highlighting the efficiency and feasibility of solar projects in the region. Overall, Tamil Nadu has identified 1,357.71 km² of feasible land for ground-mounted solar projects, supporting a potential generation capacity of 205 GW.

Virudhunagar is a prime hub for solar energy, with high solar irradiance, ample land, and supportive policies. This makes the district ideal for both large-scale and rooftop solar projects.

As India accelerates its clean energy transition, Virudhunagar is set to become a model district for solar power, offering long-term environmental and economic benefits for businesses and residents alike.
