Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMPL) has completed the installation of a 1.8 MW solar power plant at its Muttom coach yard. Kochi Metro has reported that the power is assisting the metro operator in meeting 51 percent of its overall power requirements from solar energy following its commissioning. Over the years, the fallow area near the Muttom depot has been used for solar generating installations.
Just like Delhi Metro, Kochi Metro is also getting powered by renewable energy.
Loknath Behera, the Managing Director of Kochi Metro, officially opened the plant. According to Kochi Metro’s official announcement, the new solar facility has increased the overall installed solar power-producing capacity by 9.90 MW. The project will be expanded to a total capacity of 10.50 MW.
According to the Kochi Metro, the project will generate a total of 147.49 lakh units of solar power each year.
Kochi Metro has utilized vacant land near the depot for solar power generation throughout the years.
The Solar Program at KMPL
The Kochi Metro’s solar power projects are being implemented in three stages. The first two phases have already been completed and are ready for use. The newly opened factory is part of the third phase of the project, which is now underway. This phase also traps the solar potential of the metro lines’ open sky spaces.
Rooftop solar with a capacity of 2.7MWp was installed on metro stations and depots in Phase I of the project, generating 37 lakh units per year since 2018.
Phase II began in 2019 with the installation of ground-mounted solar power at the Kochi Metro depot, which produces 44 lakh units per year.
“Once the Third Phase is completed, Kochi Metro will have a total power generation capacity of 10.5 MWp, generating roughly 147.49 lakh units annually, providing about 55 percent of total energy usage,” said the Managing Director of Kochi Metro.
