NHPC Ltd. has announced an investment of ₹5,500 crore to develop a 1,000 MW solar power project in Bihar. Chairman and Managing Director Raj Kumar Chaudhary shared this during the Bihar Business Connect 2024 investor summit, where the company signed an MoU with the state government to formalize the initiative.

“We have proposed to invest Rs 5,500 crore in setting up a 1,000 MW solar power project,” he said.

The project is expected to be completed within 1.5 to 2 years after land acquisition.

“Land is crucial for solar projects. And we would urge the state government to facilitate land acquisition so that we could do the project on time,” he said.

According to its website, the company operates nearly 7 GW of hydropower plants, with an additional 9.3 GW under construction.

Chairman Raj Kumar Chaudhary also revealed plans for a small solar plant to generate electricity for green hydrogen production.

“The green hydrogen produced will be used to power passenger buses,” he said.

Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water using green energy, is the cleanest known energy source as it produces no carbon and only water when burnt.

Chaudhary mentioned that NHPC will fund a green hydrogen-powered bus, which will be handed over to the state government as part of its clean energy promotion initiatives.

NHPC is also undertaking similar projects in Gujarat and other states.

“The government is keen that green hydrogen is promoted as fuel and our plan is in line with that,” he added.
