Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that over 4 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Speaking at the curtain-raiser for the 7th International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly, set for November 3-6 in New Delhi, the Minister highlighted this important milestone.
“India is positioning itself as a key player in global efforts to combat climate change. We are simultaneously working to achieve our own energy goals. In fact, just last week India achieved 400,000 (4 lakh) installations under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana,” he said, addressing the gathering that included delegates from member countries.
In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme aimed at powering one crore households through rooftop solar installations, offering up to 300 units of free electricity per month.
In July, Joshi stated that more than 1.28 crore registrations had been received under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with the government committed to expediting rooftop solar installations for 1 crore beneficiaries.
He also highlighted that India added around 17.44 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity between January and September 2024. Solar power now accounts for 20% of India’s total installed capacity, reflecting a growth rate of over 26% compared to the previous year.
According to official data, by September, India’s total installed power generation capacity stood at 452.694 GW, with 201.457 GW coming from renewable energy sources.
