According to a Study, India's Renewable Energy Sector Might Employ 1 Million People by 2030

According to an independent study released on Thursday by the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW), Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and Skill Council for Green Jobs, India’s renewable energy sector (SCGJ) could potentially employ one million people by 2030, which is ten times the current workforce of an estimated 1.1 lakh.

Small-scale renewable energy efforts such as rooftop solar and mini and micro-grid systems would create the majority of new jobs, according to the study “India’s Expanding Clean Energy Workforce.”

The CEEW-NRDC-SCGJ report also underlined the pandemic’s negative impact on renewable energy employment. According to the study, compared to the 12,400 new employees hired in FY19, just 5,200 new employees were hired in FY20 and 6400 in FY21.

According to the research, the rooftop solar industry hired the majority of the new personnel in FY21, growing by 9% annually and accounting for 1.4 GW of capacity. India successfully trained 78,000 people under the Suryamitra training program between 2015 and 2017 to boost the availability of qualified personnel for renewable energy projects.

“To maximize employment potential in the industry, the 2019 Union Budget should focus on scaling up rooftop solar, small and microgrid systems, and domestic solar manufacturing,” stated Dr. Arunabha Ghosh, CEO of CEEW.
