Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik Airport Commissions 4MWp Solar Plant, Goes Completely Greens

Highlights:

  • BPIA goes fully green after installing a 4MWp ground-mounted solar plant
  • The project uses 10,580 modules and will help the airport meet 60% of its power requirement.

Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) inaugurated a 4 MWp ground-mounted solar plant in its operational area on Saturday, 6th May 2023. BPIA has now become a 100% sustainable airport, with the introduction of this solar project.

The solar plant uses 10,580 modules of 380 Wp each to power multiple facilities in the building, according to the Airport Authority of India. Spread over 13.28 acres, the project was built at an investment of ₹18.75 crores.

The airport will now meet 60% of its power requirement with solar energy and the rest from other green sources like hydropower.

“We are delighted to achieve this milestone in efforts for attaining a sustainable future for the airport. As BPIA aspires to become net-zero, this achievement further encourages us to stay committed to enhancing the airport’s operational efficiency while operating on fully renewable energy” said Prasanna Pradhan, director, of BPIA.

In 2013, BPIA installed a 100kW rooftop solar plant, which has now been updated to 4.1 MW capacity as part of the organization’s efforts to switch to green energy.

BPIA is not the first Indian airport to transition to green energy. In 2022, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) became the country’s first airport to be powered by hydro & solar power. Also, Hyderabad’s GMR airport saved over ₹10 crores annually by going solar.

Moreover, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has given a target to all airports to meet 100% of their electricity demand through green energy.
