The Bihar government has commissioned the first phase of the ₹2,800 crore Kajra Solar Power Project in Lakhisarai district, marking a significant advance in clean energy deployment in eastern India. The initial phase features an 185 MW solar power plant paired with a 254 MWh battery storage system — making it one of the country’s largest grid-connected solar-plus-storage installations.
The integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) enables the plant to supply uninterrupted electricity for four to five hours during peak demand, even when sunlight is unavailable, enhancing both reliability and grid stability. Energy officials said the energised 132 kV transmission line and 100 MVA substation transformer will help evacuate clean power smoothly to the Bihar grid.
Officials from the Bihar State Power Holding Company Ltd (BSPHCL) highlighted that this renewable project is aligned with the state’s strategy to boost clean energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The second phase will add another 116 MW of solar PV capacity and 241 MWh of battery storage, bringing total generation to 301 MW and total storage to 495 MWh, with full commissioning expected by January 2027.
This milestone underscores the rising role of battery storage in India’s energy transition, enabling efficient utilization of solar energy and supporting round-the-clock power supply. Projects like Kajra pave the way for more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure across the region.
