Solar power plants, with robotic cleaning facilities, will be installed over the roofs of three municipal corporation-run material recovery facilities (MRF) in Chandigarh. The project was approved by the Chandigarh Renewal Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) at a cost of ₹6.69 crores.
The total project capacity is 1,350kW. Each MRF centre will get a 450kW solar plant. Moreover, the power plants will together generate 5.85 lakh units of energy every year. The revenue expected from the project is ₹87 lakh per annum. Out of this sum, ₹26 lakh will be shared with the municipal corporation every year.
Since MRF centres have quite a height, manual cleaning of the panels would be difficult. In order to address this maintenance challenge, a robotic cleaning facility will be made available for each solar plant. Such cleaning devices offer a water-free maintenance solution to remove dust and debris from the solar panels.
This project is part of the municipal corporation’s plan to solarize each of its buildings in the upcoming financial year and make solar energy a new revenue production segment. A strategy has been created around the same, which will be included in the authority’s next financial budget.
Chandigarh has been making significant strides to accelerate its clean energy transition. In January, the Chandigarh administrator commissioned a part of the largest floating solar plant in North India. Moreover, CREST has set a target of achieving 75 MWp solar capacity for August 2023.
