For a long time, Gujarat has been considered a progressive state. Gujarat is progressing rapidly in the Renewable Energy (RE) sector with several major green energy projects. Including power generation as well as equipment manufacturing schemes. According to the projected reports of the state government, the renewable energy generation capacity of Gujarat is expected to be 38,466 MW by 2025 and 61,466MW by 2030.
Presently, the total installed capacity of power generation from renewable energy is around 13,152 MW, which includes solar energy, wind energy, hydel, biomass, and bagasse sources.
Mamta Verma, the Principal Secretary of Energy and Petrochemicals Department of Gujarat Government, said, “In the next 3-5 years, Gujarat will certainly be a global hub for the renewable energy sector. Our installed capacity to generate power from renewable energy sources is expected to surge to over 38,000MW by 2025 and over 61,000MW by 2030.
These estimates are based on project plans that have already been finalised. The estimates are likely to be revised soon given the influx of fresh proposals.”
Further, she added, “With the state and central government’s policies and positive approach, Gujarat’s dependency on non-renewable energy will be negligible or zero in the coming years.”
Along with reducing the carbon footprint, the state government has come up with several mega projects to meet the demand for power generation and to achieve the targets set for renewable energy. One of those projects, the world’s largest hybrid (solar and wind) renewable energy park project started in 2020. The foundation stone of the project was laid by PM Narendra Modi in Kutch, Gujarat. The hybrid park is installing on 72,600 hectares, which will be about 90 km from Khavda near the Indo-Pak border.
The estimated investment cost of the project is Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
The state-run Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) affiliated four power distribution companies signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 3,979 small scale-solar power projects (0.5-4MW) with the cumulative generation capacity of 2,500MW.
The Gujarat Govt. is already developing various solar parks. Gujarat is also the top Indian state in rooftop solar installation.
