GVMC Commissions a 3 MW Floating Solar Power Project on Meghadrigedda Reservoir

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has commissioned a 3 MW floating solar power project on the Meghadri Gedda Reservoir.

The organization received 14 crores as part of the ‘urban climate change resilience trust fund’ from the ‘Asian Development Bank’ for the project. The grant falls under the ‘Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial corridor development program’

Meghadri Gedda is one of the major water sources for the city of Vishakhapatnam, and supplies over 10 million gallons daily. The eco-friendly project aims to use the underutilized space of the reservoir and promises to save over 12 acres of land. The solar panels would also prevent water evaporation to an extent.

“The project would reach its breakeven in just five years. While the annual power generation would be 4.2 million units, it will reduce 3220 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and 54,000 tonnes of coal. The floats will automatically adjust to water level variations with the support of anchors” says GVMC commissioner G Lakshmisha.

The GVMC has been striving to adopt the renewable energy mantra in several municipal schools, its main office, and key offices around the city. Before Meghadri Gedda, the organization had set up another 2 MW solar power project on Mudasarlova reservoir.
