School rooftop with installed solar panels in Gujarat
School officials attending rooftop solar policy discussion

School management bodies across Gujarat have urged the state government to include educational institutions in its rooftop solar subsidy scheme. Schools are seeking relief through solar adoption with electricity bills rising sharply, ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh per month.

The demand was formally raised during a meeting held at the Control and Command Centre in Gandhinagar. Representatives from various school associations highlighted the exclusion of schools from the subsidy framework, despite Gujarat being a leader in solar energy with over 5.3 GW of rooftop capacity.

Bhaskar Patel, Chairman of the State Schools Management Association, emphasized that subsidy access would reduce operational costs and promote green energy adoption in the education sector. Over 7,500 government and grant-in-aid schools could benefit from such policy inclusion.

The education department, led by Minister Kuber Dindor and Principal Secretary Mukesh Kumar, responded positively. Officials confirmed plans to coordinate with the energy department to potentially extend subsidy coverage to schools and escalate the proposal to central authorities if necessary. If implemented, the move could boost Gujarat’s solar transition and ease financial pressure on school administrations.
