Himachal to Set Up 2 Solar Power Projects in Tribal Districts

Highlights:

  • Himachal Government plans to set up solar plants in the tribal districts of Pangi valley
  • Nodal agency Himurja to oversee the construction which will cost approx. ₹10 crores.

The Himachal Pradesh government is planning to set up two solar power projects of 400kW each in the Pangi subdivision of the Chamba district. The land for the projects has been transferred to Himurja, which is the state-run nodal agency for renewable energy.

Himurja has already selected 1 hectare of land each in the Hillaur and Dharwas regions of Pangi Valley to set up the plant, which will require an investment of approx. ₹10 crores. Moreover, state Chief Minister Mr. Sukhvinder Singh has instructed the agency to complete the construction at the earliest.

Apart from this, the CM also states that a provision has been made in the state budget 2023-24 to set up a solar power-based battery energy storage system in Pangi to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the residents.

Pangi Valley is one of the remotest regions of Himachal Pradesh and is considered a poor-developed tribal area. The area also witnesses frequent power breakdowns due to bad weather and heavy rainfall. Thus, the development of solar infrastructure will not only ensure a reliable clean energy supply in the region but also contribute to Himachal’s goal of becoming a green energy state.

“The state government was taking steps towards reducing carbon emissions by harnessing solar energy. To make Himachal a “green energy state” by March 31, 2026, and to achieve this goal, the government has set a target to start 500-MW capacity solar power projects in fiscal 2023-24. Additionally, two panchayats in each district will be developed as green panchayats on a pilot basis,” said Mr. Singh.
