Seeing the jobs scenario in India, the Power Ministry has taken a very bold step. Power Ministry of India wants the solar developers to manufacture the products in India if they want to sell/do business in India.
There is a lot of solar module and cell manufacturers who are selling their products in India while manufacturing them somewhere else. Keeping the manufacturing local will ensure that with the rapid growth of solar energy in India, jobs opportunities will also be created.
“If you want to sell in India, you will have to set up manufacturing here. If you don’t set up manufacturing here, I can give it to you in writing that you will not qualify for entry into that approved list of models and manufacturers,” Singh said at an event on self-reliance in renewable energy manufacturing organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
The government has announced a 40% basic customs duty (BCD) on solar modules and 25% on solar cells from April 1, 2022. With this announcement, the government is aiming to develop and grow the domestic solar manufacturing industry.
A large portion of the Indian Energy Budget goes into the import of solar components.
The Power Ministry has confirmed that the tariff barriers on the import of renewable energy equipment would remain in place and non-tariff barriers would practically restrict the purchase of such equipment to those manufactured locally.
