The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur has installed a 500kW solar project at its premises. The project was undertaken to reduce the institute’s carbon footprint and promote solar adoption.
The solar plant is expected to generate around 2500 units in a day and 7.30 lakh units annually. It will meet 30% of the college’s electricity demand and help save around ₹18 lakh/annum. The plant will also offset 543 tons of C02.
Additionally, IIM Udaipur has installed 200 solar-powered street light poles along a 3.5 km stretch of inner peripheral road. Plans are underway to install another 100 solar streetlights on the campus. The initiative will enhance safety and save around 1.20 lakh electrical units every year. That in turn, will result in a financial saving of 11 lakh per annum.
The solar light initiative will also reduce another 85 tons of CO2 from the institute’s overall carbon footprint.
“Our vision at IIM Udaipur is rooted in sustainability and responsible growth. Installing the 500 kW solar plant and solar street light poles underscores our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint while embracing renewable energy solutions. We believe this initiative will inspire our academic community and set an example for sustainable practices.” Said Prof. Ashok Banerjee, Director of IIM Udaipur.
In the past few years, several educational institutions have begun turning to solar energy to meet their power demand. In March 2023, Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited (REIL) and the medical education department partnered to install rooftop solar power plants in over 19 colleges and 55 hospitals in the state. Moreover, the Bihar government is also planning to install solar panels over school roofs in the state.
